John Greyson's ZERO PATIENCE at 7e Genre (Paris)
MediaQueer.ca and Le 7e Genre present a screening + panel discussion:
Zero Patience
A film by John Greyson (Canada | 1993 | 95min) starring Normand Fauteux, Dianne Heatherington, Richardo Keens-Douglas
Monday, June 19, 8PM at the Cinéma Brady, 30 boulevard de Strasbourg, 75010, Paris, France
The idea of making a musical comedy about AIDS at the height of the pandemic may seem rather strange, but it accurately describes Zero Patience, a one-of-kind feature film imbued with politics and queer fantasy in equal measure. Director John Greyson’s 1993 Canadian feature received a limited release in France two years later, and still stands as essential viewing in the representations of AIDS in cinema history. The slightly mad-cap storyline centres on the infamous “Patient Zero” who was mistakenly accused of being HIV’s Typhoid Mary. With its unlikely assemblage of present-day and spectral characters, plethora of statements on HIV issues, and infused with an ACT-UP-like activist edge, the film is sustained by the pop and New Wave musical numbers and peppered with vignettes like the unforgettable Two Butt Duet. Indeed, Zero Patience is a brilliant and passionate species unto itself.
Guest speakers: the filmmaker, John Greyson; Didier Roth-Bettoni is the author of several books about the representation of homosexuality in cinema, and has just released Les Années sida à l’écran (ErosOnyx, 2017) which will include a DVD of Zero Patience, one of the book’s focal points; and Thomas Waugh, emeritus professor of Film Studies at Concordia University (Montréal). The screening is presented in partnership with Paris-based film society Le 7e Genre, the Queer Media Database Canada-Québec (MediaQueer.ca), the Quinzaine des Fiertés LGBT, CarlottaFilms, and the Centre LGBT Paris-Île-de-France.
